Discovery Channel: Deadliest Catch

One of my favorite TV shows to watch currently is Deadliest Catch on the Discovery Channel.

I’m really not sure why I like the show so much. Growing up in Michigan, I know cold weather in the winter. But I don’t think I have ever been in the conditions that those fisherman go through; below zero tempature, being on a boat in the Bering Sea and the risk of the boat going under.

The Bering Sea holds the secret to Alaskan Gold, the highly lucrative and elusive…King Crab. With a new set of rules to abide by the ships and the crews will have new deadlines, more stress, and more dangerous conditions. With forty-foot waves, 700 pound crab pots, freezing temperatures and your mortality staring you in the face…this job ranks as one of the deadliest. Any time spent of the Bering Sea is dangerous, we watch crews race to meet their quota and make it home safely.

It amazes (1) how hard the work seems to be, (2) how much money they can earn, while risking their lives and (3) how the Discovery Channel films the show. And Mike Rowe as the narrator does a perfect job of telling the stories of the men on the boats.

I even have some favorite Deadliest Catch Captains:

Capt. Phil Harris on Cornelia Marie

Capt. Sig Hansen on Northwestern (and his brother Edgar Hansen)

Capt. John Hillstrand on Time Bandit

Capt. Andy Hillstrand on Time Bandit

I found the Official Deadliest Catch Fan Site and it has everything you would want to know about the show on there. I’m glad that there are other people like me who are a fan of the show. And you can tell how popular the show is, it has its own video game for Xbox 360 and PC inspired by the Deadliest Catch series entitled Deadliest Catch: Alaskan Storm.

One thing I would love to have from the show is one of the king crabs that they catch.
