Friends and Family of Brad Keesler

Dear Friends and Family of Brad Keesler, If you haven’t heard already, I have been invited to perform in a live audition round for the 2013 William C.
Byrd Young Artists Competition in Flint.

The competition will take place on March 2 at the Flint Institute of Music. I will compete in a live audition round of thirty woodwind and brass musicians under 30 years old. The top 5 soloists will advance to a final round that evening where they will perform on a recital and have a chance to win $6000 and an opportunity to solo with the Flint Symphony Orchestra! I wanted to let you all know that I will be in the area
that weekend and would like to invite anyone who is available to come out and support me. The audition round is free and open to the public. I am performing at 11:15 am on Saturday, March 2. If I am lucky enough to make it to the final round, that begins at 7:30 pm, I believe. I know not all of you can make it and that Flint might be a long trip for some of you, but if any of you think you can come, I would really
appreciate having a cheering section in the audience!

And please feel free to invite any other family or friends that I may have missed or aren’t connected to via Facebook, or if they just want to come hear some
good trombone music! I am flying from Atlanta to Flint on Friday, March 1
and leaving Sunday, March 3.

My mom, Cynthia Keesler will be driving up on her own and meeting me
there, gratefully acting as my “chauffeur!” Even if you can’t make it to the competition on Saturday, let us
know if you have some down time and want to try to catch up somewhere or somehow. And FYI, there is an issue with the website right now.

It should be http://www.byrdartists.com but when you try to access the site it redirects you to some spam
version.

Dancing with the Stars (Season 16)

20130226-100937.jpg

Today was the day that they announced the Stars for Season 16 of Dancing with the Stars.
As in the past, I will be posting my 2-cents worth on the show and who are my picks for: Best of the Week, Worst of the Week and Favorite Song(s) of the Week.
I will be posting my Early-bird Picks of who I thinks might win this season next week.
Here is a list for Dancing with the Stars – Season 16.

Dancing with the Stars’ Cast

From the Wall Street Journal and Pictures from abc.com – Dancing with the Stars

Aly Raisman
Olympian No. 1, Aly Raisman and Mark Ballas: The 2012 Olympic gold-medal gymnast becomes an overwhelming favorite before she steps on the ballroom floor. She won on floor exercise for a spirited number to “Hava Nagila.” Mark was partnered with fellow gymnast golden girl Shawn Johnson in Season 8, so it’s not surprising he’s with Aly.
Dorothy Hamill
Olympian No. 2, Dorothy Hamill and Tristan MacManus: The figure-skating legend of the 1976 Olympics is 56 years old??? She looks amazing, and she doesn’t think she’s worthy to be paired with Irish cutie Tristan. BTW, for three of his four seasons, Tristan has been paired with the oldest woman of the cast. Is this going to be his modus operandi forever?
Wynonna Judd
Wynonna Judd and Tony Dovolani: The country-music star, arguably one of the better-known names this season, said she had been asked for six years to do the show. She makes a joke about wanting to get back to her original weight of “8 pounds, 15 ounces” and said it’s the year of doing things that scare you. I see the inevitable “weight loss/personal growth” arc. Tony, who won last season with Melissa, is back with his usual kind of partner.
Kellie Pickler
Kellie Pickler and Derek Hough: At last, reality giants collide, as Kellie is the first former “American Idol” contestant to compete on “DWTS.” Will she split the country vote with Wynonna? Does her past as a roller-skating waitress help? Kellie said she’ll have experience with falling. Many expected Derek to leave after last season, but he’s back.
Victor Ortiz
Victor Ortiz and Lindsay Arnold: Other than Season 4 finalist Laila Ali, boxers have a middling record on “DWTS.” (Think the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard and Floyd Mayweather Jr.). Victor, a former WBC welterweight champion, looks to change that streak. In keeping with the country theme, Brooke said he’s also wanted a career as a country-music singer.
Jacoby Jones
The aforementioned football player, Jacoby Jones and Karina Smirnoff: He shows some swagger at 8:20 a.m. as he’s introduced and flirts with Karina. He’s also known for his end-zone dances and demonstrates for “GMA” viewers. He’s not shy at all. Len’s probably not going to like him; I see Ochocinco Take 2.
Andy Dick
Andy Dick and Sharna Burgess: He’s a comedian/recovering addict, so it’s hard not to think of him as this season’s Steve-O or David Arquette, especially as he “trips” as he walks in. Sharna looks a little like former pro Lacey Schwimmer, and Lacey had been with Steve-O.
D.L Hughley
D.L. Hughley and Cheryl Burke: ABC dips into its 1990s well with sitcom star D.L., who was the lead on “The Hughleys” for a few seasons. He’s continued to act and also has appeared on CNN as a political commentator.
Lisa Vanderpump
A Real Housewife, Lisa Vanderpump and Gleb Savchenko: Real Housewives have been rumored to be joining the “DWTS” pool for years. Lisa, from “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” is the first. She’s also responsible for the most random piece of trivia Tuesday: She was one of the first people to water ski barefoot in England.
Ingo Rademacher
Ingo Rademacher and Kym Johnson: After Kellie Monaco’s successful stints on “DWTS,” it’s not surprising the show has raided the “General Hospital” cast again. The man better known as Jasper Jax played up his surfing background Tuesday. At least visually, he and Kym make a very striking couple and share Australian backgrounds.
Zendaya Coleman
Zendaya Coleman and Valentin Chmerkovskiy: The obligatory Disney Channel star, Zendaya appears on “Shake It Up,” the same show that brought us Season 14’s Roshon Fegan. At 16, Zendaya is the youngest contestant this season. This is also the first time we’ll have Val but no big brother Maks.

I have seen some of the comments that have been made already on this cast. And I only have the following to say:
Really, what did you expect?? This show is meant to be fun and entertaining. If you get that bent out of shape because you don’t like the “star”, then you need some help.
If you don’t like who is on the show this season, change the channel! No one is making to watch this show.
If you don’t know who these “stars” are, that doesn’t mean that they are not famous to other people. It only means, you don’t know who they are.
Don’t be a bully! I have read some comments about age, weight and height already. Really? Do you personally know these people that you can make such comments? And who cares how old they are, how much they weight or if they are tall enough?

I’m sure there are going to be some people who disagree with my “2-cants” worth of comments, but this is my blog and I’ll try hard not to be hard. I have been doing this for several seasons and I do it because it’s fun.
So I’m looking forward to this upcoming season.
Side note:
Lisa Vanderpump and Gleb Savchenko
Andy Dick and Sharna Burgess
Victor Ortiz and Lindsay Arnold

Aloha From Hawaii

I am and will always be an Elvis Presley fan.

009_220-273

If I had to pick one concert to see of someone is is living or who has died, it would be Elvis Presley’s Aloha From Hawaii” from 1973.

Aloha from Hawaii

Aloha from Hawaii is a music concert that was headlined by Elvis Presley, and was broadcast live via satellite on January 14, 1973. The concert took place at the Honolulu International Center (HIC) in Honolulu (now known as the Neal S. Blaisdell Center) and aired in over 40 countries across Asia and Europe (who received the telecast the next day, also in primetime)… The show was the most expensive entertainment special at the time, costing $2.5 million. (from wikipedia.com)

I would have been one of those fans crying and fainting in the crowd. Of course, I would have only been six years old when this concert was held, but I know I would be one of those fans.

Here is the set list from the concert. (From wikipedia.com)

Presley performed a vast array of old and recent hits in the show, and they are as follows:

I think my favorite song out of this song list (there are a lot of my favorites on this song list) — “An American Trilogy“. I tear up every time I hear or see the video of this song.

With the 40th anniversary of the concert this year, I will be watching the DVD of the concert again. I will be singing and swooning while watching Elvis and his band sing. Wishing that I could have seen him in concert.

Long live Elvis!
