“Just a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody” by David Lee Roth

Why do I like this song so much??

I have been listening to a lot of different songs on my iPod lately. One that I keep playing over and over is — “Just a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody” by David Lee Roth. Not sure why I like this song so much. I have never really been a huge fan of David Lee Roth, a.k.a. Diamond Dave. And I love Louis Prima version from 1956 (video).

When I found the video on YouTube, there are no words to describe it. Check out what he’s wearing! Did I miss the memo saying that guys with long hair were hot?? Then there is the Michael Jackson look-a-like. And I love the Billy Idol spoof. This video has a little bit of everything.

One of my favorite lyrics of the song is…

Hummala bebhuhla zeebuhla boobuhla
hummala bebhuhla zeebuhla bop

Here are some facts that I didn’t know about “Just a Gigolo”:

  • It was originally adapted from an Austrian hit “Schoner Gigolo,” written in 1928 and was first sung in America by the French star Irene Bordoni
  • “Just a Gigolo” appeared in a 1931 film, a 1932 Betty Boop cartoon and a 1993 TV-series, all titled after the song
  • In 1931, this became Bing Crosby’s first-ever hit song as a solo artist (#12 Pop Hit)
  • “Just a Gigolo” is best known in a form first recorded by Louis Prima in 1956, where it was paired in a medley with another old standard, “I Ain’t Got Nobody” (words by Roger Graham and music by Spencer Williams, 1915).
  • In 1978, the Village People recorded a cover of Prima’s version — would of loved to see a video of this version!
  • David Lee Roth’s cover in 1985 that reached #12 on the Billboard Hot 100
  • So hopefully you have this song on your iPod, it’s a fun song to listen to when you are stressed out and need a laugh or two.

So in the words of all that recorded this song…

Bop bozadee bozadee bop zitty bop!
